THE seven young men who died together all worked in the car industry and spent their days chatting incessantly about motors.
And as their pal Sean Kelly fights for life in hospital, it emerged the eighth victim, 66-year-old bachelor Hugh Friel, had just left a bingo game with winnings of EUR300 before the crash.
Mr Kelly, 23, was discovered unconscious and still belted into the driver's seat. Every other victim, including Mr Friel, had been thrown from the vehicles.
Gardai said there had been speculation one of the men had to be recovered from a river but were unable to confirm it last night as they investigated the multiple deaths.

A friend of Mark McLaughlin, 21, one of the victims, said: "They were just out for the night having a bit of craic.
"They piled into Sean's car to make a short journey, a journey they'd all made thousands of times before.
"There's no way they would have done that if they'd thought for one minute it would end in someone else's death, let alone their own, because they were all decent fellas.
"I can't believe they're gone and I'm doing everything I can to support my best friend who is the sister of one of the lads."
As well as eight dead, the smash also left one woman in shock after her car was involved in the initial collision that caused the second fatal smash.
A neighbour of the woman driver who survived said: "She's not coping well.
"She was deeply shocked to be involved in the accident in the first place and her car is a wreck with one wheel missing and the driver's side smashed up.
"But that's the least of her worries. She just can't understand how she was lucky enough not to be added to the list of fatalities. She is probably still in shock and hasn't been able to say what she saw but she's been unable to sleep and she is very weepy."
Mr Kelly was last night still being treated for serious head and internal injuries at Letterkenny General Hospital where his condition was described as serious but stable.

His father Liam, who drives a concrete lorry, and his housewife mum, were keeping a vigil in the hospital as he was being looked after in the intensive care unit.
Late last night he was still connected to a life-support machine and his family have been in discussions with surgeons and a consultant about how they assess his progress.
Family friend and Mayor of Buncrana, Padraig Mac Lochlainn, said: "There has been talk about turning off the life-support machine but he is still alive and everyone is pulling for him.
