SAN BERNARDINO - Barton Elementary School teacher Mario Jacquez put out a call Friday that he was collecting shoes to send to victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

By Wednesday morning, boxes filled to the brim with boots, running shoes and sandals lined the walls of his fourth-grade classroom.

"I wanted to do this so people there would not be walking barefoot on glass and rocks in the street," said Joelene Burrows, 9, who donated her mom's barely worn slippers to the cause.

Schools throughout the San Bernardino area have been quick to respond to the plight of the Haitian people who have suffered greatly since a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the capital of Port-au-Prince on Jan. 12.

The earthquake may have killed as many as 200,000 people and damage to buildings has been extensive.

Basic supplies like food, water and medical aid have been slow in trickling in to survivors living in tent cities.

Jacquez knew he wanted to help as soon as he saw televised images of the Haitian people lying injured in the street and begging for aid in the aftermath of the earthquake.

"I was seeing these people who didn't have anything left," he said. "So I immediately started thinking what is the best way to help."

His solution was gathering shoes to give to Sport Chalet. The store has partnered with Soles4Souls, a charity that collects shoes for people in need.

Other schools in the San Bernardino City Unified School District are also doing their part to aid the struggling Haitians.

San Andreas High School students are donating money to the American Red Cross.

At Golden Valley Middle School, principal Marguerite Williams has asked students to give generously to their Haiti Earthquake Response.

And in the Rialto Unified School District, Preston Elementary School students are participating in the Help Haiti Penny Drive.

Starting Friday, the school will also hold Wear Hats for Haiti Day. Students are allowed to wear a hat if they bring $1 to school.

"We want to really emphasize to our students that they have a responsibility to help the citizens of the world not just their community," said Preston Principal Erick Witherspoon.

Students at Aquinas High School in San Bernardino paid $2 for the opportunity to wear clothing other than uniforms to school last Friday and subsequently raised $700.

The child development center at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa has begun a Change for Children of Haiti drive that will last the remainder of the week.

University of Redlands swimmers, led by the university's swim team, are taking the plunge to help earthquake victims.

The swim-a-thon, 700 Miles to Haiti, at the University of Redlands Thompson Aquatic Center will raise money during the week of Jan. 25 with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
