THE rugby community in North Wales has been quick to stand up in defence of Eifion Lewis-Roberts, following the prop's omission from Wales' autumn Test squad and comments made by head coach Warren Gatland earlier in the week.

Former Ruthin prop Lewis-Roberts earned his solitary Wales cap last autumn coming on as a substitute in a Friday night victory over Canada at the Millennium Stadium.

While injury forced him to miss the summer tour to North America, many - myself included - felt he was not only a shoe-in to make this autumn's squad, but would also be a starter in the three Tests for which he would be available. Lewis-Roberts was always likely to miss the opening game against the All Blacks as it falls outside the IRB's Test window and his club Sale Sharks would have been under no obligation to release him.

However, not only was the 21-stone front-row not picked by the Welsh management, Gatland also spoke on Monday about his worries over Lewis-Roberts' weight, saying: "We have a concern about Eifion. We've told him that to play at international level he still needs to get a bit fitter and drop a bit of weight.

"There is no guarantee a player starting in the Premiership should be selected for Wales. We are conscious he has got some potential and could come into the side in the future.

Ruthin's "But, as a player, if he wants to be involved in international rugby there is some work to do on his mobility and fitness. He is well aware of that."

But former Ruthin team-mate Rhys Hughes, who also helped Lewis- Roberts realise his rugby potential and secure a pathway to the professional game, was amazed at his omission.

"I'm just disappointed really," said Hughes. "To be honest, going into an international series with the players Wales have got missing, and still looking rolex fake to play the style of rugby that Gatland is talking about, then Eifion is the kind of player you need in your squad.

"If they haven't got strong scrums and without that solid set piece play then they're not going to be in the game, they're going to be defending a lot and it could be costly.

"Gatland can say the Premiership isn't as good as it was, but Eifion is still playing against some of the best props in the world. I watched him against Newcastle Falcons the other week and they have got Carl Heymans at loosehead, who is regarded as one of the best in the world. But Eifion was at the very least earning parity in the scrum.

"Playing the Leicester Tigers and also against the likes of Stade Francais, Eifion has got the experience and ability to play at the highest level. Even if they have a worry he can't play 80 minutes, then put him on for 50-60 minutes and he'll do a good job and get them playing the way they want to play."

Lewis-Roberts has admitted himself in the past that he has struggled with his bulk, but is also working hard to bring his weight down in a bid to make himself more mobile around the park.

And Hughes added: "I've known him since he was 21 and he was just such a natural talent.

"Yes he has always been a big lad, but people don't give him credit for what he does around the park. He is very mobile and also he is working exceptionally hard on bringing his weight down.

"I know Robin McBryde has been working with Eifion very closely, and it was a huge disappointment that he didn't go over to America in the summer with Wales.
